Review: FC Bayern UCL away jersey 12-13
by Dave Borak, Washington DC, USA.
Short version:
This has been my favorite Bayern kit in a long time. Black and sleek, bold accent colors, and an inspiring design. This Adidas-made, crewneck-collar shirt has authentic printing, high quality workmanship, and breathable material. I love how the all-black design (like last season’s kit) makes the accents — the silver Adidas stripes and logo, the Bayern team badge with 4 stars embroidered over the heart, the intricate sleeve badges of the UCL Starball and UCL Badge of Distinction, and a bold name and number set on back — really pop out. The red/orange accents on the collar and sleeve-ends are bright enough to be seen on the foggiest pitch. Best of all, the starry stripes on the chest look very closely like the roof of the Allianz Arena, site of many FC Bayern victories, site of the infamous 2012 UEFA Champions League final. Bayern reminds its fans not to forget the mistakes of last season, but also inspires them focus on winning the Champions League this season.
Review FC Bayern Champions League away jersey 12/13
Last season, after a dramatic win to overcome Real Madrid in the semifinals, FC Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League run came to an end in the final as they fell to Chelsea in penalties. Those who remember the Bavarian giants’ third kit from 11/12 will recall the bold, black Champions League look with added iconic red and white stripes. So I was excited to see how the new Bayern Munich 12/13 Champions League third kit would send a message that Bayern fans should learn from the past, but also focus on winning the 12/13 Champions League Cup.
This outstanding new Bayern Munich 12/13 Champions League third kit sends that exact message. It goes without saying that the Adidas-made, crewneck-collar shirt has authentic printing, high quality workmanship, and breathable material. But it’s the design that really stands out and is made to inspire FC Bayern fans.
First, the all-black design (like last season’s kit) makes the accents really pop out. And, as usual, the attention to small detail is outstanding. The silver Adidas stripes and logo, the Bayern team badge with 4 stars embroidered over the heart – they stand out and shine with Bayern pride. As with all other Bayern shirts, the design also incorporates the traditional motto “Mia San Mia” (we are who we are) embroidered in an interesting color on the dark main shade of the jersey’s back. The jersey comes with intricate sleeve badges of the UCL Starball and UCL Badge of Distinction (which indicates Bayern’s four titles), as well as a bold name and number set on back.
This color is intriguing. The 12/13 Bayern home jersey is predominantly red, while the 12/13 Bayern away jersey white with an orange collar and sleeve-ends. So what color to make the fringes of the third kit? It’s a strange, yet appealing mix of orange and red – what Adidas called “infrared.” At first, I thought it was too bright, but its boldness is necessary on an otherwise serene black background.
So far, though, this kit sounds similar to last season’s – but the real distinction is that the red and white stripes across the chest are gone. Instead, you will see starry stripes that emanate from the logo to the collar. The design brilliantly takes Bayern fans back home. The starry stripes on the chest look very closely like the roof of the Allianz Arena, site of many FC Bayern victories, site of the infamous 2012 UEFA Champions League final. So as I said, Bayern reminds its fans not to forget the mistakes of last season, but also inspires them focus on winning the Champions League this season.
This has been my favorite Bayern kit in a long time. Black and sleek, bold accent colors, and an inspiring design. What more could a fan ask for?
