Q & A with FC Copenhagen reviewer

FC Copenhagen reviewer in the mixed zone after the match

So here we go again. Ready to pose some questions and hear the answers. This time from CH in San Jose, California.

Q: Which was your first jersey and whom gave it to you ?

* Umbro Manchester United 92-94 home. I bought it myself.

Q: If you were to give a piece of advise to the clothing manufacturer what would that be ?

* Be careful adding a collar. I know they have historical precedent but they can often make the shirt look ridiculous or old fashioned.

Q: If you were to give a piece of advise to the name and number kit manufacturer what would that be ?

* For Adidas FCK kits, the current shirt is a good template. Don’t add a collar and continue to produce replicas that are not tight-fitting for those of us not so svelte anymore!

Q: What is the greatest challenge for your favorite team right now ?

* Manchester United…need to upgrade the central midfield. Other than Cleverley, it’s aging and no longer world class.

Q: When evaluating the club at the current moment what is more important: the legacy or the players in the current squad ?

club or athletes ?

* Legacy is just that if you don’t have current players to keep up the standard.

Q: Thank you very much for these interesting answers. Very enlightening in fact.

Q & A with Juventus reviewer

Juventus reviewer takes questions in the mixed zone after the game!

Q&A session with Jonne Keranen , Finland.

Q: Which was your first jersey and whom gave it to you ?

A: My first jersey was a long sleeved Juventus home jersey with number 10 (Baggio) on the back. My uncle gave it to me after his trip to Italy in the early 90’s. If I recall correctly it was made out of some kind of woolen material like some jerseys were back in those days. I was maybe six or seven years old.

Q: If you were to give a piece of advise to the clothing manufacturer what would that be ?

A: Listen to the fans. Specially with jersey designs. That’s my biggest advice. After all, fans are the ones who buy jerseys. It would be wise for example to include some fan feedback during the design process. Fans know the traditions of the club and have many good ideas regarding shirt designs but their opinions are rarely taken into consideration.

A: Other advice would be to pay more attention to the durability of jerseys. As jersey materials are nowadays so light weight and breathable, durability might be overlooked. People don’t want to see their jerseys start to bobble after a couple of washes. But I understand the fact that manufacturers bring new jerseys to the market annually for almost every club nowadays, so durability is not the first thing on their agenda.

Q: If you were to give a piece of advise to the name and number kit manufacturer what would that be ?

A: Use thicker and more durable materials. Sporting ID’s Sencilia is a good example of a durable material. The name and number is usually the first thing that shows wear on a football jersey. I’d like to see Sencilia type material on other than just Premier league print sets too.

Q: What is the greatest challenge for your favorite team right now ?

A: The greatest challenge for Juventus at the moment is getting through from the group stages in the Champions league. It would require at least a point at Shakhtar that is not an easy task. In the Serie A the main challenge is to be consistent. Juventus has great depth in their squad at the moment so I’ll doubt it would be a problem.

Q: When evaluating the club at the current moment what is more important: the legacy or the players in the current squad ?

A: I’d say 70 % current squad, 30 % legacy. You can’t just dwell on past success like Liverpool supporters. You have to look forward. But having said that I have to admit that the legacy of the club is still very important. In order to totally understand what it means to support your club, you have to know the club traditions, history and how the legacy of the club has been formed.

Q: Thank you for those interesting answers to our questions. Always good to get a fresh perspective from the outside. To hear it from the fans.

Reviewers needed! Reviewers wanted!

Video Reviewer Recruitment!

Over the course of the past year we have received a number of product reviews all relating to soccer jerseys or other pieces of apparel.

These reviews have all been in the shape of a written text + sometimes with accompanying photos.

We will now try to up the ante a bit. We will try to move it from written reviews and to a video review!

The video review is in many ways much more difficult than the written review. The reason for this is that people are so accustomed to professionally produced moving images, motion pictures, movies or simply films. More lately video has become a category in its own right with the rise of the Internet and services like youtube and vimeo.

To craft a good video it requires a good story line, a good structure, a good scene performance by the presenter  + good technical equipment and setup.

This makes it vastly more difficult to create a good video than it does to write a good review. But as the many youtube sensations have shown it can be done even with very rather basic equipment at hand and essentially no budget.

It does to a large extent come down to the individual performing in front of the camera. A decent HD camera, and good lights and sound (or the absence of noise).

So how to do a good amateur video?

Keep it short. Keep it simple. Most videos can get the essential message out in around 2 minutes. Rule of thumb should be more than 1 minute always less than 3 minutes in total.

Lights. For photography as well as for video or movies the right lights are essential. Very bright lights which will reflect in the lense should be avoided as well as too little light. Artificial lights can be effective but should never be directed towards the lenses of the camera. Bright sunshine should be avoided but a bright day is the best environment for outside shooting.

Sound. Most amateur cameras whether photo cameras with video or camcorders come with a small built in microphone. Such a microphone has difficulty in picking up the sound unless it is coming from very close by and can easily be disturbed by background noise. So unless one has a large microphone as an accessory to the camera one has to pay a lot of attention to noise and positioning towards the microphone.

Of course it is possible to make a performance of the cuff and simply press play and then pull it off without any preparations or without any script. But possibly for most people the better result will come with a few rounds of rehearsal and some kind of script whether written down or simply elaborated and stored in the mind.

Background. A stable background can make the video more focused on the presenter but it can also be inserted artifically using a video editing program. However, in order to give the video more life and to include the sense of place a static background is of course not an advantage.

Cast. Often a production is more interesting if it takes place like a conversation rather than as a monologue.

an example is the economist and tea with the Economist click here for an example!

Inspiration. The web is packaged with do it yourself tutorials and advise as how to do this or how to do that. Youtube and vimeo also have plenty of amateur material published where one find inspiration.

We invite a global audience to participate. What would be an extra benefit of a review. To bring some visuals from your location! The inside of a house looks pretty much the same across the world these days. Cities and countries not so much though certain elements seem to have been universally adopted by now. So to bring a video clip from a public place in an interesting location would surely be very welcome!

So if you are interested in providing us with a video review of a soccer jersey drop us an email:

let us know what you can do and we would be glad to send you a jersey for video reviewing.

Review: FC Copenhagen home jersey 12-13

Review: FC Copenhagen 12-13 home jersey

By Christiaan Husing , San Jose, California

I enjoyed my visit to Copenhagen and have a fondness for Denmark and the Danish people. I’ve been a football fan since my youth and have amassed a large football shirt collection. I have worn many shirts from many clubs from many manufacturers.

FC Copenhagen have been my Danish side for some years. I have owned a number of FCK shirts from the early 2000s onward.

In recent years, Kappa’s line of replica shirts have not been the best for supporters. Tight-fitting, they look good on athletes but not necessary on out of shape or aged supporters! The Kappa logo, with its naked man and woman, has embarrassing connotations in the United States.

Thankfully, for the 2012-2013 season, FCK have paired with Adidas to provide a line of classic replica shirts and training wear. The 2012-2013 FC Copenhagen home shirt merges Adidas’ classic style with FCK’s recent history.

The shirt is light and features Adidas’ Climacool fabric which is moisture-wicking. I first wore it doing some cleaning work and felt just as dry after I was finished as when I put it on.

The three Adidas blue stripes on the shoulder are a classic look and the FCK emblem is embroidered on the chest. The FCK logo definitely attracts attention with its blue lion and the Danish flag makes the shirt stand out here in America. With the Carlsberg sponsors logo screen printed on the chest, nobody will mistake this shirt as being from Major League Soccer!\

Adidas shirts tend to be fond of collars, which while historical, do not please me from a style standpoint. Thankfully, this shirt does not have a collar. Unlike the Kappa shirts, the replica is cut for a more comfortable fit and will accommodate those who are thin and those who are not-so-thin!

What makes this shirt stand out more from past FCK shirts is the addition of “1992-2012” in gold on the back neck line in gold font. This celebrates the 20th anniversary of the modern FCK club.

I recommend the shirt to all FCK supporters and congratulate Adidas on their effort!

Review: FC Bayern Champions League jersey 12-13

Review: FC Bayern UCL away jersey 12-13

by Dave Borak, Washington DC, USA.

Short version:

This has been my favorite Bayern kit in a long time. Black and sleek, bold accent colors, and an inspiring design. This Adidas-made, crewneck-collar shirt has authentic printing, high quality workmanship, and breathable material.  I love how the all-black design (like last season’s kit) makes the accents — the silver Adidas stripes and logo, the Bayern team badge with 4 stars embroidered over the heart, the intricate sleeve badges of the UCL Starball and UCL Badge of Distinction, and a bold name and number set on back — really pop out.  The red/orange accents on the collar and sleeve-ends are bright enough to be seen on the foggiest pitch. Best of all, the starry stripes on the chest look very closely like the roof of the Allianz Arena, site of many FC Bayern victories, site of the infamous 2012 UEFA Champions League final.  Bayern reminds its fans not to forget the mistakes of last season, but also inspires them focus on winning the Champions League this season.

Review FC Bayern Champions League away jersey 12/13

Last season, after a dramatic win to overcome Real Madrid in the semifinals, FC Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League run came to an end in the final as they fell to Chelsea in penalties.   Those who remember the Bavarian giants’ third kit from 11/12 will recall the bold, black Champions League look with added iconic red and white stripes. So I was excited to see how the new Bayern Munich 12/13 Champions League third kit would send a message that Bayern fans should learn from the past, but also focus on winning the 12/13 Champions League Cup.

This outstanding new Bayern Munich 12/13 Champions League third kit sends that exact message.  It goes without saying that the Adidas-made, crewneck-collar shirt has authentic printing, high quality workmanship, and breathable material.  But it’s the design that really stands out and is made to inspire FC Bayern fans.

First, the all-black design (like last season’s kit) makes the accents really pop out.  And, as usual, the attention to small detail is outstanding.  The silver Adidas stripes and logo, the Bayern team badge with 4 stars embroidered over the heart – they stand out and shine with Bayern pride.  As with all other Bayern shirts, the design also incorporates the traditional motto “Mia San Mia” (we are who we are) embroidered in an interesting color on the dark main shade of the jersey’s back. The jersey comes with intricate sleeve badges of the UCL Starball and UCL Badge of Distinction (which indicates Bayern’s four titles), as well as a bold name and number set on back.

This color is intriguing. The 12/13 Bayern home jersey is predominantly red, while the 12/13 Bayern away jersey white with an orange collar and sleeve-ends. So what color to make the fringes of the third kit?  It’s a strange, yet appealing mix of orange and red – what Adidas called “infrared.”  At first, I thought it was too bright, but its boldness is necessary on an otherwise serene black background.

So far, though, this kit sounds similar to last season’s – but the real distinction is that the red and white stripes across the chest are gone.  Instead, you will see starry stripes that emanate from the logo to the collar.  The design brilliantly takes Bayern fans back home. The starry stripes on the chest look very closely like the roof of the Allianz Arena, site of many FC Bayern victories, site of the infamous 2012 UEFA Champions League final.  So as I said, Bayern reminds its fans not to forget the mistakes of last season, but also inspires them focus on winning the Champions League this season.

This has been my favorite Bayern kit in a long time. Black and sleek, bold accent colors, and an inspiring design. What more could a fan ask for?
